Hawaii volcano: New fissure spits lava in aftermath of Kilauea eruption

The spattering at fissure 18, shown above, on Kilauea Volcano's Lower East Rift Zone, follows a red aviation alert from USGS, warning airlines and pilots to avoid the area. Sulphur dioxide gas, which is the cause of ‘vog’ and volcanic ash, is not only destructive for aircraft engines, but USGS have also warned that steam driven eruptions could thrust ash 20,000 feet high into the air. Fissure 18, emerged near Halekamahina Loop Road, on volcanoes a fissure is an extended crack at the surface, where lava erupts.
